Why only four signs serve

The arithmetic is exact. The Haab' has 365 days; the Tzolk'in cycles 20 day signs. Each new 0 Pop lands five positions ahead in the day-sign list (365 = 18 x 20 + 5). Starting from any sign, the sequence is sign, sign+5, sign+10, sign+15, sign — a closed cycle of four. So only one of four equally-spaced subsets ever occupies 0 Pop. Which subset depends on the era and the Maya region.

The four Year Bearer sets

History records four parallel systems. The Tikal/Classic set — Ik', Manik', Eb', Kab'an — is the academic mainstream and matches the Dresden Codex. The Campeche set — Ak'b'al, Lamat, B'en, Etz'nab' — appears in some Postclassic codices. The Mayapan set — K'an, Muluk, Ix, Kawak — was Late Postclassic Yucatec. The highland K'iche' set in living practice — No'j (Kab'an), Iq' (Ik'), Kej (Manik'), E (Eb') — matches Tikal under K'iche' names. Most modern astrology uses the Tikal/K'iche' set.

How the Mam shapes a chart

Your personal Mam is the Year Bearer of the Haab' year you were born in — a slow modifier on top of your day sign and tone. Treat it like a generational signature: long-range temperament, mode of meeting the world. The Mam also carries a tone (1–13), so a year is named e.g. 9 Ik'. Bearer tones rotate +5 mod 13 each year; the full bearer cycle (4 signs x 13 numbers) gives 52 — the Calendar Round.

The four directions

Each Year Bearer is associated with one of the four cardinal directions (East, North, West, South), a colour, and a sacred mountain. The Mam is therefore not just a sign but a place — an axis on which the year is set down.

Year Bearer ceremonies

The transition from Wayeb' to 0 Pop is the Maya New Year, when the outgoing Mam steps down and the new bearer is installed. In communities around Lake Atitlán and the Guatemalan highlands, day-keepers lead ceremonies of fire, copal incense, and offerings — closing 365 days, opening another. The new Mam's character sets the tone for all civic and personal life ahead.
