Why 13?

Thirteen is sacred Maya cosmology — the 13 levels of the upper world in some sources. It also drives the Tzolk'in's combinatorics: 13 numbers x 20 day signs = 260 kin, with no number-name pair repeating. The tone count is what makes the Tzolk'in a calendar rather than a list. Each day sign visits all 13 tones once per Tzolk'in cycle.

The 1-to-13 energy arc

Practitioners describe a wave. Tones 1–3 initiate: seed, polarise, activate — alive but raw. Tones 4–6 stabilise: form, empower, flow — energy gets a shape. 7 is the mid-point hinge: mystery, mirror, deepest reflection. 8–10 mature: harmonise, persevere, manifest — the work becomes visible. 11–13 release: catalyse, integrate, transcend — highest voltage, often turbulent. Reading a day's tone tells you what phase the energy is in, before you even check the sign.

Traditional vs Dreamspell tones

The traditional K'iche' count carries themes such as Unity, Duality, Action, Stability, Center, drawn from living day-keeper practice. The Dreamspell names — Magnetic, Lunar, Electric, etc. — are José Argüelles' coinage from his 1990 system, which fused Maya material with New Age cosmology and his 13-Moon calendar. They are widely used online but not the traditional Maya count. Many Mayanist sources reject them; we document both so readers can choose.

How to use your tone

Find your birth tone alongside your day sign — together they form your kin. The tone tells you your style: a Tone-1 person initiates; a Tone-9 person finishes. For daily readings, check today's tone before scheduling: tone 1 for new starts, tone 7 for reflection, tone 13 for completion or ritual closure. Your tone also recurs every 13 days, regardless of which day sign accompanies it.
